Art of the Perfect Clutter

Or we can call it layering... yes, let's call it that.

{elle decor}

Some people say I'm messy but I just say... I like the lived in feel.
Ok, they're right I'm messy! I like to have things right at my fingertips.
As much as I love clean lines and those spotless showcase homes we all see in magazines, sometimes it's nice to see a true slice-of-life picture like this one.
What do you think?

House of the Week

..That time of week during which we turn green with envy over more great design!

x double dose since it's a whole HOUSE and not the usual Room of the Week!...

I love the whimsy feel of this eating area. And Mr. Owl on the wall? How fun!

I like how the saturated colors in the furniture really pop against the neutral background

Those stacked-globe lamps are evvvvvrah-where, and come in so many great colors!

Rainy Day Corners

It is the perfect day here for a good curl up + book + coffee.

So today I have alcoves and snuggling on the brain. Why not post about it, right?

How cool is this, recessed into the wall?

the perfect alcove for reading:

A great example of incorporating kitchen +  a little living space:

In this bay window, I would curl up with:

Window benches are always enticing, don't you think?

...here I would thumb through yes, a children's book:

A corner to sit in while you page through a book about ....
  How to draw trees!
just don't forget to bring your pencils

I love this narrow office:

Perfect for getting lost in the pages of an adventure:

A cozy ikat chair:

for a little mystery...

oh yes.

Hello Genie: how good of you to come out of your bottle

My first wish is to be able to speak French.

Second wish: to be able to fly. (what? world peace mayble? ok, both.)

Third wish: some divinely inspired desk space.

...Until you grant me my third wish, these inspiration pictures shall suffice:

Ok, genie or not, I will have an inspiration board like that within the month!
This is a beautiful (and feminine!) desk space.
I simply adore it. Calm soothing colors, plenty of storage place, windows placed perfectly for daydreaming...

I love the gabled roof and the white shelving. This is a very calm, restful home office.
If it were mine, I would probably have a different chair. This one is a bit...  Garrison Keillor/ Prairie Home Companion. (Does that make as much sense to you as it does to me? I hope so.)

Maybe this white one:
(or that yellow-green if I felt like going funky. But for this office, I would want serenity! So, white.)

from Outblush.com

King Louis chairs
-- probably my favey kind of chair IN the world... so clean! so classic! so pretty!
These chairs are fairly easy to come by if you have time to scour a few estate sales or garage sales. Or even better--keep your eye out on Craigslist
And better yet? They are paintable, re-coverable-- you can achieve any look you're going for!
Now, back to offices!

This office reminds me of the architecture building where I went to college.
I loved studying in that building!
Nope, I wasn't an architecture major (although that would have been cool.) Anthropology!
Can you imagine the amount of work you'd get done here?
I know... a lot.
I like that they softened up the mod look with an oriental rug.

A desk for writing thank-you notes. And not a whole lot more, but who cares? It's pretty.
See the coral lamp on the desk? Coral-inspired accessories are everywhere right now.
Lamps, pillows, bowls + centerpieces.

ooooo. Que ladylike. This looks like it might be in one end of a sun room. I like the contrast of the dark overhead lamp-chandelier against the white tones of the room. And the rustic floor and rustic unpainted wood frames on the hutch are a nice touch.

And proof that you can turn the smallest space into a workable office area, we have this gem from
I've been wanting to blog about this one for a month now.
And can you believe that this is what the closet used to look like?
See, no space is too small or too unusual to turn into some functional office space!

Do you feel inspired to create a little nook with some desk space? If so, tell me about it, I'd love to hear!

My first step is going to be getting my hands on a big ole' frame, (garage sale!) some cork board, maybe some linen fabric, and make a big inspiration board. I really like to be able to visualize things as I go along, and so hiding things in desk drawers isn't quite my thing. Ok that, and I'm just naturally a mess-maker. It takes all kinds, right! My point is... even something like an inspiration board on your wall can help you achieve what you might count on a desk to do, so don't be afraid to think outside the box!

Happy room-polishing! Tonight I'm going to go to a class on Color Theory. I'm learning so much! Can't wait to do a big post on color-choosing. It's a big challenge, right? But fun!

Thanks for stopping by!

Dining Room Chair Makeover

The time had very much come for us to recover our dining room chairs.
Holy moly! Check out these jewel-toned chairs in their "before" glory:

A close up of the old fabric:

We hit up Water Street Fabrics here in Wichita for some new fabric. If you live in the area, I hiiiiighly suggest checking out this store! They have all kinds of fabric available, plus a room full of all kinds of samples.

Anyway: we chose a new paisley fabric that
1. looks pretty on its own, and
2. helps the dining room flow better with the adjoining living room

Ready for us to tear into it!

So here are the steps we took:

Detach the cushions from the chairs:

Take out the old staples:

Use the old fabric as a pattern to cut out the new:
(great advice for any reupholstering or recovering project!)

Fold the new fabric over the cushion, paying special attention that the corners fold tightly:

Work some magic with the staple gun!

All covered and ready to screw back in:

Starting to see the fruits of our labor:

Dining room workshop:

Look how different the fabric appears, depending on the light:

up close, the blue pops out:

standing back, you see more of the brown tones:
(especially next to all the brown wood!)
